Question 2
can you have a car registered in one state and live in another?...  i'm currently working in South Carolina and i bought and have my car registered in Florida. I want to leave it registered in Florida is that legal?

Answers
1)   If you're rich, anything is possible. If you're not rich, I'd say check with the dealer or the nearby DMV. - Tempest from Morph

2)   yes. legally if you have two residences..the law is that the car has to be registered in the state that it spends the majority of the year in - Dave87gn

3)   == probably these days you are required to register your car at the residence address and that would be within the state where you work and sleep == UNLESS you can prove college status that you are an out of state student and MOM & POP have you as a dependent in Florida .... now the other way to get the true answer to this is call the tax office that issues car tags and talk about the issue and the SC state rules for auto registration .... most states give you 30 days to get the car registered or you face a fine/penalty ..... call and ask ... - XTX

4)   If you are on work status in SC I think you will be safe to leave your car registered at your permanent address in FL. Your license plate and driver license have to both be registered in the same state.

My husband is on a 3-month job redeployment in NC and his permanent address is in TN. He will not be registering his auto and drivers license in NC. His next job redeployment will probably be to AL or LA and he won't be changing it then either. - Laredo

5)   If you can legally claim to have a residence in Florida, then yes, it is legal. That means having an address that you can claim as your residence. Lying about your address of residence is illegal. If you have moved and failed to inform the DMV that you have moved, technically you are in violation, but you have not committed a criminal act that will get you arrested.

However, make sure your insurance company knows where your care is garaged, because if your car is stolen from SC or you have an accident in SC, it will take them about two seconds to figure out that you misrepresented where your car is garaged, and they will deny your claim, and you will be on the hook for the full amount.

"Garaged" is an insurance term for where you currently live, even if your car isn't in an actual garage. - Frank

Question 3
Will a waived speeding ticket still increase my insurance premium?...  I got a ticket and the cop said that if I pleaded no contest and wrote a letter there is a decent chance the court might reduce or waive the charges. If they are waived, I am wondering if my insurance rates will still go up (Or do I even have to report the ticket to the insurance company if it is dismissed?).

Answers
1)   Whether you pay charges or not does not affect the fact that you got a ticket. It depends upon the company but a speeding ticket will nearly always increase your rates. Reporting it or not does not matter as it shows up in the reporting system monitored by the insurance companies. - Don S

2)   If you don't report the ticket to your insurance carrier they will still find out because the DMV will notify them. It will be posted against your driving record. I think the cop was blowing smoke up your axx when he suggested writing a letter. He must have some sort of sadistic contempt for speeders. - Laredo

3)   Dude, the cop just doesn't want you to schedule a court date, because if you do, he has to show up. They are much less likely to waive your fees by a letter than if you actually show up and talk to the judge.

To answer your question, waiving the fees won't get you off the hook with your driving record, which is what your insurance company cares about. The only way to escape the "ding" on your record is to show up to court and plead not guilty. But you'd better have a decent defense prepared, or the judge will get pissed for wasting the court's time.

If the cop doesn't show, which happens sometimes, the case will usually be dismissed. - This Guys Sez

4)   Getting new car insurance is a quite simple way to save or lower overall expenses. You can get a quick estimate at websites they most often give you lots of quotes.

I have used http://www.InsureAutoNow.info - Lynn W

Question 5
Car insurance legal help?...  Hey I was wandering if its illegal to own a car but be a named driver on it, as my dad is buying me a car in my name but i am going on his policy as a named driver. i will commute to college 4 times a week and back which is about 15 miles a day in total but the rest of the time my dad will have the car il have it only for college and maybe the cinema or bowling here or there

Answers
1)   The car needs to be registered and insured by the person who normally uses it. If your father does the most miles, he can insure it with you as a named driver, but it should be registered in his name. (That doesn't prove it belongs to him). If you do the most miles, it should be registered and insured in your name. If you don't follow this rule, you could find that the insurance company won't pay if you have a claim and you could be prosecuted for driving with invalid insurance. - old know all

2)   it does not matter who owns the car, if your dad insures it he can name any driver he wishes, even the owner, its legal. - Aonarach

3)   The policyholder must be the main driver and the facts about who is registered keeper etc must be disclosed to the insurance company which they do ask these details now. - WelshLad
